Big Lebowsky is simply the funniest movie ever made. Once you see it, you will wonder why other comedies are not that funny. It has nothing to do with the plot which you can let unfold without really getting what is going on. It is about characters, about the dialogue and about the LA in which all of those characters live in. Jeff Bridges has the role of his life, as does John Goodman. They are joined by some of the funniest people around and what you get is a movie so funny and so well-written that it makes other comedies pale in comparison.

One insanely funny comedy that you might have not heard of is definitely Leningrad Cowboys Meet Moses. It is a story about a Soviet band that goes to Mexico in the first movie, but is now wishing to return home. We follow them as they get back home from Mexico and as they travel across Europe. They are met with their old manager who is now claiming to be Moses. As you can see, it is a ludicrous premise and it is also quite an insane movie with dry delivery and lines that do not seem that funny on paper, but which are simply hilarious when seen in the movie. It is a true gem.

Sunshine Boys is our last recommendation and it definitely does not sound like the funniest movie when it is explained. It is a story about two guys who used to do vaudeville together in the 30s and who are now asked to perform at a celebration of some kind, showing on TV after more than 30 years of being separated. The only problem is that they did not part ways on best of terms and they are both of a certain age, to say the least. Watching these two old guys bicker and one-up each other the whole movie provides us with some of the best dialogue ever written and it is more than worth your time if nothing, then to see Walter Matthau being a grumpy old man, which is what he does best.

Well, the simple truth is that, while they do sound very similar, these are two entirely different codecs, being developed by different companies. The interesting thing here is that the people who are behind the xvid codec were once working on the divx codec.

It all started in the 1990s when a guy called Jerome Rota from Montpellier in France developed DivX ;-*) by hacking the MPEG-4 video codec. The reason behind this was that he simply wanted to be able to play his own video portfolio which was encoded with MPEG-4 and the existing windows media player didn’t want to play it. The job was done in a day.

This later lead to the further developments of the codec which became more and more sophisticated. During this period, the divx codec was known as opendivx codec as it was open source. However, over the years, it because a part of a company and it is no longer open source software. An important moment came in 2001, when an improved version of the divx codec came out under the name encore2. It is that this new encore2 code that some of the people from the openDivx project took and started making their own codec, under the name xvid.

Therefore, these are two entirely different codecs and the main difference is that the divx codec is owned by the Divx.inc, which is a company and that it is not an open source software, while xvid has remained such a software and it can be used by anyone for free. These codecs are today the two leading codecs and they are the most used codecs in the world.

The best B movie if you ask us here at Divx Codec Advice is Blood of Heroes or Salute of the Juggers as it is also known. It is a post-apocalyptic movie with Rutger Hauer and it has everything that makes B movies so great. It has a great and inventive story, it has fantastic characters and it also has ludicrous ideas that make it simply amazing. It is a story of a team of Juggers who play a game that no one knows how began, in which the main goal is to stick a skull of a dog on a rod that is sticking out of the ground. The best thing is that no one gives you the rules of the game and during the movie you get to figure it out on your own. It should be said that the action has nothing B-movie about it and that it is done fantastically.

Gunmen is yet another fantastic B movie that we would urge you to see. It stars Christopher Lambert (the king of B movies), Mario Van Peebles, Denis Leary and Patrick Stewart (Capt. Piccard). It is a fun movie with elements of comedy and action and it is simply one of the most exciting and fun movies ever made. You can see that it was never meant to be very serious and that all of the people involved had tons of fun making it. It is a breezy movie that hits all the right notes and entertains as no other movie can.

We should also mention Hollow Point, a real B movie from the 90s starring a guy whose name we cannot remember, Donald Sutherland and Tia Carrere, whom you may remember as the hottie from True Lies and Wayne’s World.  It is another very fun movie in which they are trying to stop a maniac from uniting three national mafias. As you would guess from a movie with such a premise, it is never taking itself too seriously and once again you have action and comedy that will make your day. If you get the chance to see it, do not miss it for the world.

We will start with the best one – Blade Runner. Blade Runner shaped the way in which we see our potential future. Before it, almost all SF movies featured people in uniform clothing, very sterile surroundings and a world that is either completely amazing, or utterly horrid. With Blade Runner, we got a future that seemed feasible, at least back in 82. Today, the year in which it takes place, 2019, seems just behind the corner and there are still no reports of any flying cars. Also, Blade Runner was one of the first SF movies that made the world think. It was not about saving princesses and battling robots with lasers or anything. It is a movie about humanity and what it means to be a human being. Of course, we mustn’t fail to mention an amazing cast complete with Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer and Edward James Olmos, nor can we forget the simply breath-taking score by Vangelis.

Of course, this article would not be complete without the Star Wars trilogy. We are only considering the first three movies as it is best to forget the new trilogy. The old trilogy was one of a kind thing and it truly made the world notice SF. It is still one of the most talked about franchises of all times and there are very good reasons for this. The first three Star Wars movies are about as much fun as you can have with a movie. It has it all, adventure, romance, evil emperors, all mixed in a world that is very futuristic and yet you can feel that it could exist.

Another classic SF movie that you can watch using divx codec is definitely Alien. When it came out, people did not know what they could expect. They sure as hell did not expect an SF movie that is as real as they get, with a completely believable and realistic picture of future where people are just the same as they are today, trying to keep their head on their shoulders and trying to make some money. Also, Alien gave us the scariest monster of all times, the eponymous alien who turned out to be one of the most iconic creatures ever imagined by man.

We would like to finish our little SF list with Terminator 2. If you weren’t around when it first came out, then you cannot imagine what it was like. It was simply the best movie ever made and when you saw it, you realized that they were telling the truth. It is still the best action movie ever made, with Arnie giving his classic performance as the Terminator.

The first movie that we would like to recommend for watching using your divx codec is High Noon. There is a very good reason why this movie is considered one of the classic movies and that is the fact that it is simply stunning. It is an old black and white western in which the sheriff of a town has a prearranged standoff with a group of outlaws and he is trying to get someone to help him for the most part of the movie. Everyone turns out to be cowards and he is left to fight them alone. The movie starts at about 15 minutes to 11 and from there on, the story goes in real time. It is an incredible movie and it stars one of the most beautiful women of all times Grace Kelly before she went off and married royalty in Europe.

Of course, we have to put The Good, the Bad and the Ugly here, simply because it is one of the most entertaining movies of all times. The interaction between the three main characters (especially Eastwood and Wallach) is done so well, as well as the numerous gunfights and different twists that you will not feel bored for a second. IT also has one of the most recognizable soundtracks of all times with the main theme that has become the part of the culture. It is funny how an Italian director working with European crews in Spain could bring the Old West so vividly to the silver screen.

The Ox-Bow incident is one of the most unorthodox westerns of all times, but it is also one of the finest ones ever made. It is one of the most modern westerns ever made, even though it was done when Henry Fonda was still a young actor. It features a story about a lynch mob who is out for blood and who are mostly debating whether they should hang two guys who they think stole some horses. It is one of the most tense and one of the darkest Hollywood movies ever made and a proof that western movies are not only about guns and gunfights.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is yet another western movie that feels very modern even when it is viewed today. Some critics have said that it is one of the most important movies in the history of Hollywood and that it just might be the best political movie that Hollywood has ever produced. Our opinion is that it is a true part of American history and a movie that explains a lot about this country. It feels fresh and relevant even today, 50 years after it was made. It also features one of the best performances by the Duke, John Wayne.
